In New Orleans, Louisiana, many property owners have fallen on hard times recently. The New Orleans tax assessor and government officials have given people a reprieve. Typically, property taxes are due by January 31st. Now, officials have pushed this deadline out one month, making the new due date February 28th.

Residents in New Orleans Are Still Struggling with Damage Caused by Hurricane Ida

In addition to issues created by a challenging economy and the Covid pandemic, residents of New Orleans are dealing with a significant amount of damage in the wake of Hurricane Ida. Government officials have decided that residents need more time to repair their properties and fix issues that may have developed. As a result, residents will have until February 28, 2022  to pay their property taxes.

Reminder: Rules When Paying Property Taxes

Local government officials have indicated that they cannot take more than three property tax stubs and accompanying payment from a single taxpayer. New Orleans residents are not able to pay their property taxes using cash. Receipts will not be given after property taxes have been paid. For additional details on your property tax payments, contact the City of Orleans Tax Collector.

Multiple Locations Available To Drop Off Taxes

Although many people pay their property taxes through their lenders, this is not the case for everyone. There are multiple locations available to drop off property tax payments. On February 24th, February 25th, and February 28th, taxpayers can drop their property tax payments off at four separate public libraries: East New Orleans Regional Library, Norman Mayer Library, Mid-City Library, and Algiers Regional Library. In addition, residents can also pay their taxes in person if they travel to City Hall.

Tax Assessed Value Cuts and Additional Savings

In addition to the extended deadline, owners of residential properties will receive an additional financial reprieve. A five percent reduction in assessed value was issued for 2022, which will reduce property tax statements.  The cut was authorized in September to help individuals experiencing trouble managing expenses. Hurricane Ida landed as a major hurricane, ripping the roofs off multiple buildings while causing severe damage to homes in the area. Due to the circumstances, residents also had the opportunity to petition for a further cut in assessed value.
